picsaver 1.3.1 does not work with password on Windows 2000

I'm trying to use picsaver v1.3.1 on a Windows 2000 (service pack 3) PC. I need to set password protection. Picsaver works fine when previewed in the display properties dialog, but when it starts under normal conditions, the following error is immediately displayed:

Runtime Error!
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

If I turn off password protection, picsaver works fine.
