Image size different between freeware an shareware version

Postby diamond » Thu Mar 11, 2004 3:36 pm

I have just evaluated the freeware edition 4.1.1 which is a great sotware.
In order to have a look to shareware extra function, I just installed it and noticed after the transfert of my Canon Powershot A70 picture that pictures sizes are different ???
Example :
Freeware 4.1.1 : size => 225 932
Shareware 4.1.1 : size => 224 862

All parameters on both release are the same.

The good size is the freeware version.

Have you got any idee ?

You mean the exact same image transferred with the two editions are different? Well I do not know!! Do the images look different? Do they exhibit the same set of EXIF data?

Yes, the exact same image. Exif data are the same. No difference looking !!!

This problem appear on all images (all the time about 1kb less in size).

I have installed the canon driver (before no) and nothing changed.

Anyway, about canon drivers, i didn't see a difference with or without canon driver ?. What is the interrest to installed it (i use winxp pro sp1).

If you are transfering your images in WIA/PTP mode then you do not need the Canon drivers.

As for the size difference it is really a mystery as (of course) the exact same source code is used to download the images from the camera... Still if you could send me the two files to check them it would be great! info at nabocorp dot com.

Sorry for the delay in the answer but I was busy last days.
I just made others tests between freeware and shareware and on another PC.
I confirm the problem so I am going to send you 2 pictures

Yes,

I am looking at them. The good news is that the the pixels are 100% the same between the two images. As far as I can see the difference is in the EXIF tags. First data is not aligned the same so one has added zero's (no impact on the value of tags). Second the largest one has an empty comment of 254 zero's where the smallest one has no comment at all. Apart from that the set of EXIF tags is exactly the same.

Now to know where that difference comes from is another story. As I asked you in mail I need to know if you transfered these files using the Canon mode or the WIA/PTP. I'll check on my IXUS 400 if I can reproduce this but I admit this is quite strange as I can guarantee that the exact same source code is used in the two versions!

I presume of course that you used the two versions on the same machine. A change in the OS or in the Canon drivers could have this impact.
